What is stack stone?

Stack stone (also called stacked stone or stone veneer) is a wall cladding style built from individual pieces of stone laid in a random, dry-stacked pattern rather than a uniform grid of tiles. The look comes from natural stone's irregular texture and colour variation, arranged to read as a single rugged, textured surface rather than repeating units.

Corners

Getting a clean external corner is one of the trickiest parts of any stacked-stone installation — mitre-cut stone corners are difficult to get consistent and are prone to chipping. Norstone's answer is a two-piece, finger-jointed interlocking corner system available for all of its panel products, including XL Rockpanels and AKSENT 3D: the corner units simply lock together and onto the wall at a true 90°, with no mitre cutting and no specialist skills required. Installation basics

Norstone stacked-stone panels install over any prepared cementitious substrate using a polymer-modified tile thinset — no specialist tools, grout or specialist labour required. In outline, the process is:

• Prepare and confirm the substrate is sound, clean and correctly rated for the panel weight.
• Mix a polymer-modified tile thinset meeting ANSI 118.4 and 118.11 adhesion standards to a smooth, creamy consistency.
• Set a base line, then apply thinset to both the panel and the wall and press each panel into place.
• Stagger the joints between rows for a natural look, and handle corners with the matching interlocking corner units.
• Clean excess thinset before it cures, then seal once the adhesive has fully set.

Sealing & maintenance

Once the adhesive has fully cured, Norstone recommends applying a water-based penetrating natural stone sealer — always test on a sample piece first. Beyond initial sealing, natural stone cladding is low-maintenance: it does not need painting or refinishing, and general upkeep is limited to occasional cleaning appropriate to a natural stone surface. Reseal timing and any product-specific sealer recommendation should be confirmed with your sealer manufacturer and, for exterior or wet-area applications, a licensed installer.
